The Man Behind The Message

Shaun Whiter - amputee, speaker, businessman, competitor ... husband and dad.

On 1st July 2016 Shaun Whiter was preparing for a pre-season at Newmarket Town FC. He was a never a white boots player but had decided to get himself a pair and was ready for the mickey taking! That evening he received a call from his mate Joey Abbs. He had a flat tyre, could Shaun come and help? Of course he could!

As Shaun and Joey worked on changing the tyre a Ford Focus slammed into Shaun, crushing him up against his own car. The Ford Focus then reversed and drove off, leaving Shaun for dead and Joey badly injured. Joey managed to call 999 and the East Anglia Air Ambulance ultimately saved Shaun's life ... but his legs couldn't be saved.

His recovery has been inspirational and his family (plus the football family!) have been a huge part of that. He has made it his mission to help young athletes to avoid making similar mistakes to the one that driver made but also to talk about the mental health challenges that come up in sport, and in life, of being grateful of what you do have (rather than reflecting on what you don't) and tackling those times of great adversity ...

What people say about Shaun

Shaun has given presentations to scholars and first teams in professional football and now in cricket also, appearing at the 2024 Rookie Camp where speakers included World Cup and Ashes winner Chris Woakes. The feedback has been, across the board, amazing and we're delighted to share some of that with you ...

"Once again I would like to thank you and Shaun for coming in to deliver your workshop, the session has had an unbelievable impact on the boys in the session and through the entire club, everyone has been talking about it which has been absolutely amazing to see and hear. People have been stopping me to say that they didn’t realise how much we give to the boys and what the academy actually delivers so a genuine heartfelt thank you from me and the team."
